CPT and ICD-10 Urinary Tract Stoma Coding Changes in 2017

There are a numerous changes to urology CPT® coding and ICD-10 post Oct 1, 2016 and in 2017. One of the significant changes is in the coding updates for prostate conditions. There are also a significant number of changes in infection and inflammatory reaction choices. Time is running out. It is vital that you focus on these areas for prostate conditions.

ICD-10 Urological Coding Changes in Prostate Conditions:

There are revisions, deletions, and new additions to codes for numerous prostate disorders. However, there are three revisions that should be kept in mind:

  • 0 (Enlarged prostate without lower urinary tract symptoms) will change to “Benign prostatic hyperplasia without lower urinary tract symptoms”
  • 1 (Enlarged prostate with lower urinary tract symptoms) will change to “Benign prostatic hyperplasia with lower urinary tract symptoms”
  • 39 (Other post-surgical erectile dysfunction) will change to “Other and unspecified postprocedural erectile dysfunction.”

Add ‘Continent’ to Several Urinary Tract Codes

Be careful when reporting problems with urinary tract stoma, because it looks like you’ll have quite a few changes to incorporate. Revisions will include:

  • 113 will change from Postprocedural anterior urethral stricture to Postprocedural anterior bulbous urethral stricture
  • 520 will change from Hemorrhage of other external stoma of urinary tract to Hemorrhage of incontinent stoma of urinary tract
  • 521 will shift from Infection of other external stoma of urinary tract to Infection of incontinent stoma of urinary tract
  • 522 will shift from Malfunction of other external stoma of urinary tract to Malfunction of incontinent stoma of urinary tract
  • 528 will update from Other complication of other external stoma of urinary tract to Other complication of incontinent stoma of urinary tract
  • 530 will update from Hemorrhage of other stoma of urinary tract to Hemorrhage of continent stoma of urinary tract
  • 531 will change from Infection of other stoma of urinary tract to Infection of continent stoma of urinary tract
  • 532 will shift from Malfunction of other stoma of urinary tract to Malfunction of continent stoma of urinary tract
  • 538 will shift from Other complication of other stoma of urinary tract to Other complication of continent stoma of urinary tract.

Switch Wording for Penile and Testicular Prostheses

Sometimes CPT® code descriptor changes are so slight you might not see them if you aren’t paying close enough attention. That’s the case with a series of codes for mechanical breakdown or displacement of penile or testicular prostheses, where the only changes involve a word shift and parentheses.

Codes that will follow this structure include:

  • 420~ — Displacement (mechanical) of penile (implanted) prosthesis …
  • 490~ — Other mechanical complication of penile (implanted) prosthesis …

For a complete update on CPT and ICD-10 Coding in Urology 2017, attend the Coding Updates Virtual Bootcamp 2016. This conference will review changes made in ICD-10, one year later to enable attendees to correctly use the proper diagnostic codes and avoid denials and loss of significant revenue. New and revised urology CPT® codes for 2017 will also be reviewed and discussed. In addition, attendees will receive tips and corrective measures to ensure correct diagnostic and procedural coding for various clinical scenarios.
